From 1929 to 1932, Professor I.I.Kalugin was headed of the department, it was renamed the Department of General Animal Husbandry. From 1932, the department was renamed the Department of Agricultural Animal Husbandry and was headed by the corresponding member of UIKTEA, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor A.A.Agabeyli headed it until 1966.
Professor A.A.Agabeyli devoted his work to the use of zebu breeds in Azerbaijan and other countries in the improvement of cattle, the adaptation of various high-yielding species of animals imported to our country to local conditions. The main achievement of Professor A.A.Aghabeyli was the improvement of local buffaloes of Azerbaijan and their approval as the Caucasian buffalo breed in 1970, the publication of "Buffalo" textbooks in Azerbaijani and Russian languages.
From 1966 to 1992, the Department of Agricultural Animal Husbandry was headed by Honored Scientist of the Azerbaijan SSR, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Z.G.Verdiyev. He is the author of 3-part textbooks "Livestock", "Equestrian" and "Pilgrimage". Professor Z.G.Verdiyev was the chairman of the USSR Council of Ornaments for a long time. Z.G.Verdiyev was awarded a number of government awards for his great and productive work. Among them, he was awarded 2 gold and 1 silver medals, honorary decrees of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic, honorary diplomas.
From 1992 to 2001, the department of "Breeding and feeding of farm animals" of the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute was headed by Professor T.M.Turabov. He conducted extensive research on "Genetic basis of dairy breeding of Caucasian buffalo in Azerbaijan". Professor T.M.Turabov in 1990 at the Scientific and Technical Council of the Republic of Azerbaijan raised the issue of naming the Caucasian buffalo "Azerbaijani buffalo" and this is achieved. Approved in 1970, the "Caucasian buffalo breed" was renamed the "Azerbaijani buffalo breed" in 1990. Many of his published textbooks and teaching aids are widely used by scholars and students.

In September 2020, the Department of Breeding and Feeding of Agricultural Animals began to operate as a free department at the Faculty of Zooengineering. Associate Professor, Professor of ADAU S.A.Abbasov was elected head of the department. A number of his textbooks and teaching aids "Genetics of hybridization in animal husbandry." "Fundamentals of Genetics and Breeding", "Animal Husbandry", "Poultry", "Practicum in Animal Husbandry" and "Fundamentals of Animal Husbandry and Dairy" are of great scientific interest.
At present, scientists of the department maintain scientific relations with specialists from Turkey, Ukraine, Iran, Russia (Dagestan) and conduct coordinated research.
During its activity, the staff of the department prepared and published 26 textbooks and teaching aids, a monograph.
"Livestock and Equestrian Training Center" of the Azerbaijan State Agricultural University operates under the auspices of the department and regularly conducts research work among employees, masters and students.
The teaching staff of the department consists of 13 people (3 associate professors, 2 senior teachers, 8 assistants).
