Department was founded in 1922, Professor N.D. Potemkin headed the Department of Special Animal Husbandry. The Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute was established in Baku on the basis of the agricultural faculty of the Polytechnic Institute in 1929-1930, and the head of the special livestock department was associate professor F.A. Malikov, who headed the department until 1961.
F.A. Malikov, the first doctor of sciences in the field of animal husbandry in Azerbaijan. In 1947, as a result of his scientific research, he created a breed of sheep "Azerbaijani mountain merino" with fine wool, and in that year the whole creative group was awarded the USSR State Prize. In 1958, F.A. Malikov served as President of the Azerbaijan Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Under his leadership, more than 20 doctors of sciences and candidates of sciences were trained. As a result of his hard work, the "Brown Caucasus" cattle breed was created in 1959.
Since 1961, the department was headed by Honored Zootechnician, Professor R.M. Mehdiyev. He carried out extensive work to improve the quality of sheep breeding in the republic and created high-yielding fine-wool sheep herds of meat-wool type.
From 2003 to August 2020, the department was headed by Professor G.G. Abdullayev.
The department, which was once called special animal husbandry, is now called the department of "Technology of livestock production" and is headed by Rafig Allahverdiyev, acting associate professor.
The department cooperates in the field of education and science with agricultural universities in Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, the United States and other countries in the field of animal husbandry.
Employees of the department from time to time give their advice and conduct research in the Educational Experimental Farm, farms of ADAU.
The teaching staff of the department consists of 12 people (1 professor, 2 associate professors, 1 acting associate professor, 2 senior teachers, 5 assistants).
